Praised for her sincere musicianship and heartfelt performances, soprano Kimberly Soby brings an exquisite balance of beauty and intelligence to her vast repertoire.


Ms. Soby recently graduated from New England Conservatory with dual Masters degrees in Vocal Performance and Opera Studies. Early into her tenure, the soprano triumphed in the role of Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, which she performed in a fully-staged production at Boston’s Cutler Majestic Theatre, directed by Nic Muni.  While at NEC Ms. Soby also performed the roles of: Madame Silberklang in Mozart’s The Impresario, Monica in Menotti’s The Medium, Cupid in Cavalli’s Egisto and Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel in addition to other role and scene study. During her final year at NEC, Ms. Soby was selected by audition to become one of two NEC Opera Fellows with the professional company Opera Boston.

Opera Boston engaged Ms. Soby to perform the role of Iza in La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein opposite Stephanie Blythe. She was also cast in the select ensemble of the world premiere of Zhou Long’s Madame White Snake and performed the roles of Lucy in The Telephone and the title character in Seymour Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood for the company’s Education/Outreach program. Following her residence, Opera Boston immediately engaged her for the 2010-2011 season. In addition to reprising her Education/Outreach roles, Ms. Soby covered the role of Cardillac’s Daughter in the New England premiere of Hindemith’s Cardillac and performed the role of Tonina in a new English translation of Salieri’s First the Music, Then the Words commissioned by First Night Boston and performed for over one thousand spectators at Emmanuel Church. In the company’s 2011-2012 season, Ms. Soby will sing the comprimario role of A Girl in Sir Michael Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage.


Ms. Soby also maintains an active career with many other companies in the New England area and abroad. She recently delighted audiences as Gianetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’Amore and Bastienne in Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, both with Opera del West.  With the French company Opera du Périgord, she has performed the roles of Gabrielle in Offenbach’s La vie parisienne and Manuelita in the composer’s La Périchole.


An unusually versatile performer, Ms. Soby has performed an array of diverse repertoire on the concert stage. A champion of new music, she has premiered and performed works with the Boston New Music Initiative, Prism Project Boston, Lorelei Ensemble, New England Conservatory Percussion Ensemble, the New England Conservatory Contemporary Ensembles, New Music Brandeis and the University of New Hampshire. While at NEC, she was selected to perform with the Callithumpian Consort during the celebration of composer Steve Reich’s music. Recent oratorio engagements include solo performances in Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate, Mozart’s Spaetzen-Messe, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Mass in C and Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, all with various companies throughout New England.


Ms. Soby has already earned a number of accolades for her singing. She was the 2007 Student Division winner of the Amici Vocal Competition sponsored by the Opera Theater of Connecticut, recipient of the Marks Family Prize in Music, winner of the 2006-07 University of Connecticut Concerto Competition and was the second place winner of the 2007-08 New England Conservatory Concerto Competition – Vocal Division.  She was a 2009 NATS-Boston semifinalist, a finalist in the 2009 Jenny Lind Competition and a semifinalist in the 2010 Orpheus Vocal Competition.


Before arriving in Boston, Ms. Soby attended the University of Connecticut where she earned a B.M. in Vocal Performance under Dr. Constance Rock.  She currently studies with Carole Haber and makes her home in Newton, Massachusetts.
